Managed annotation service or labeling platform?
Choose a managed service if you need the annotators as well as the tool; choose a platform if your own team will label or your data must stay in your environment. Of the 18 vendors we compared, 7 sell mainly a managed service, 4 mainly a platform, and 7 sell both.
Last verified November 7, 2026. This guide is independent: it has no affiliation with the vendors named and none of them endorses it. Nothing here was tested by us.
How do the two models compare?
| Question | Managed service | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Who labels? | The vendor's annotators | Your team, freelancers or a separate vendor |
| How it is priced | Per item, per hour or per project | Per seat, per usage unit or by subscription |
| Who manages quality? | The vendor, against targets you set | You, using the tool's review features |
| Where data sits | With the vendor, or in your cloud if they support it | In the vendor's cloud, your cloud, or on your servers for self-hosted tools |
| Speed to start | Fast if they have trained staff in your modality | Fast to sign up; slower to hire and train labelers |
| Best fit | Large one-off datasets, no spare people | Ongoing work, sensitive data, in-house experts |
Which vendors sell a managed annotation service?

How do you decide?
Answer three questions in order.
- Do you have people who can label? If not, start managed. Hiring and training a labeling team takes longer than most projects allow.
- Can the data leave your environment? If not, favor a platform you can self-host or run in your own cloud, or a managed vendor that works inside it.
- Is the work one-off or ongoing? One large dataset favors managed. A steady flow of new data often ends up on a platform with a small in-house team.
The longer argument, with costs, is in our post on the same choice.

Questions about managed and platform annotation
What is the difference between a managed annotation service and a platform?
A managed service sells finished labels: the vendor hires, trains and manages the annotators. A platform sells software: you bring the people. Many vendors offer both, either as one contract or as an add-on.
Which is cheaper?
The platform fee is usually lower than a managed price, but it leaves out labor, training and review. Count your own team's hours before deciding; the cheaper option on paper is often the costlier one in practice.
Which is more secure?
A platform can keep data inside your own environment and team, which helps under strict rules. Managed services can also be secure; ask for their SOC 2 or ISO 27001 report and where annotators work.
Can I start managed and move in-house later?
Yes, and it is common. Choose a vendor whose tool you could keep using, or make sure labels and guidelines export in a standard format so you can move them.

A ZIP code, a reply address, then a few taps describing the work. We match the outline against what each vendor publishes and write back with names; no vendor hears about you until you pick one.
Keep data, samples, label guides and logins out of this form. The outline on its own is enough for us to work from.
How this site earns: as an introduction service, it may be paid by the annotation company you are introduced to.
Received. Next steps from our side:
- Your outline is set against each vendor's published modalities, minimums, security reports and pricing.
- We write to you naming the vendors we think fit, and why.
- Nothing goes to any vendor until you reply to say which introductions you want.
